With your help, I tailor your therapy around you. This means I can draw from my knowledge in humanistic approaches, Jungian psychodynamic theory and/or Art psychotherapy.
Art therapy is a form of practice within psychotherapy that recognises our creative world as a real reflection of our psyches, and Art as the means many of us use to process, explore and grow. Art making can be used within Art therapy as a means of expression and communication, often as a way of address difficult emotions or trauma. Art therapy can be accessed by people of all ages and as individual therapy or in groups.
Not at all: the art is used to express and address emotions and issues, therefore it is about you and what you bring to it. I believe that everyone has the ability to create meaningful works of art regardless of their creative background. I have worked with numerous clients who say they are “no good at Art” or had bad experiences in school art classes that left them feeling not ‘good enough’ and during the process have been able to engage with art and the feelings they express through it.
Art therapy can be used to help with a large range of problems. These include but are not limited to; emotional, behavioural or mental health problems, learning or physical disabilities, bereavement, neurological conditions and physical illnesses, trauma. The therapeutic work is grounded in psychotherapy but has a variety of approaches, which can depend on the therapist and their approach.
Therapy can vary from experience to experience. It is a gradual process and we may spend the first few sessions simply building a rapport with/ getting to know each other. During our first session, I will always start by explaining my approach to Art Therapy, and asking you what your expectations, hopes or fears might be. We will discuss confidentiality and what we both expect from therapy sessions together, for example showing up on time, and consistent appointments etc. These things are for both me as your therapist, and you as a client to uphold. The rest of our time will be spent talking about what has brought you to therapy and how we can plan the therapy to be as helpful as possible. The rest of the first session is likely to be directed by you, to help me understand why you are there and what therapy can do to help. This can be with or without art making, depending on what the individual wants to do.
If we choose an Art Therapy approach, following the first session you may wish to explore using different art materials after the session. This could include paints, pencils, photographs, collage, clay and anything else you want to use. We will gradually build a relationship with the art making, which can aid self expression, communication, healing, exploration and change.
No - A therapist must maintain confidentiality, which means that we do not share your personal details or what you share, with others.
Note: Confidentiality can be breached if the professional has concerns that you may be at risk to yourself or to/from others. In which case a therapist would contact the relevant authority, which may be safeguarding or the police. This follows HCPC standards on confidentiality, who are my regulating professional body.
Yes, however sometimes part of the therapy is containing the work. With some artworks you may want to store things with the therapist so that you can look at it at a later date.
Some individuals may leave their work with the therapist until the therapy has concluded.
Therapy sessions run for 50 minutes, and currently the price per session is £55. It is recommended that they are scheduled weekly on a consistent day. I require a 24 hour cancellation notice, otherwise I will need to charge 50% of the session rate. If you require an initial phone call to discuss booking a session this is free of charge and can last up to 15 minutes.
My rates are £55 per 50 minutes session, however I do offer discounted rates on request, depending on your circumstances.
For example I currently offer a reduced rate for:
